Our Story
The Evolution of Muthu’s Curry
Founded in 1969, Muthu's Curry has grown from a humble eatery into one of Singapore’s most beloved Indian restaurants. This journey was made possible through the vision, resilience, and dedication of our founder, the late Mr Ayyakkannu, together with the unwavering support of generations of loyal patrons.
In its early days, Muthu’s Curry served a modest selection of traditional Indian dishes, including Mr Ayyakkannu’s signature creation: the Fish Head Curry. This iconic dish quickly captured the hearts and palates of Singaporeans, becoming a defining part of our identity.
Today, dining at Muthu’s Curry is more than just a meal. It is a vibrant cultural and culinary experience.
Over the decades, our menu has evolved to feature a wider selection of Indian cuisine from both North and South, while staying true to our Chettinad roots. Every dish is prepared with the freshest seafood, premium meats, and aromatic spices, reflecting our commitment to authenticity and quality.
While much has changed over the years, two things remain constant: the enduring popularity of our Fish Head Curry and our passion for serving exceptional food with heartfelt hospitality.
The continued support from Singaporeans, expatriates, and tourists alike stands as a testament to our dedication to delivering memorable dining experiences.

Dining at Muthu’s Curry
We take immense pride in our Fish Head Curry, pioneered by our founder and prepared using a closely guarded family recipe passed down through generations.
As tastes and expectations have evolved, so has our menu. We also have quarterly menus where we introduce new recipes inspired by seasonality and different regions of India.

Our Heritage
Rooted in Chettinad, Grown in Singapore
Muthu's Curry draws its soul from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, one of India's most storied culinary traditions, known for its complex spicing and coastal flavours.
Chettinad cuisine is celebrated for its bold, aromatic spice blends, generous use of tamarind and fresh coconut, and meticulous preparation. It is a cuisine of layered depth, where each dish tells the story of a community shaped by trade, culture, and an extraordinary love of food. This is the tradition Ayyakkannu carried to Singapore, and the one his sons continue to honour today.
Chettinad Spices
Our kitchen draws on the complex spice palette of Tamil Nadu- chilli, turmeric, cumin, fennel, coriander, and aniseed, ground and
blended in-house.
Signature Fish Head Curry
Our most celebrated dish: a meaty fish head simmered in a rich tamarind gravy with okra, tomatoes, brinjal, and pineapple. Served steaming in a claypot.
A Multicultural Legacy
Muthu's is woven into Singapore's multicultural food story, a meeting point of Tamil tradition and Singapore's rich, cosmopolitan spirit.

The Banana Leaf Tradition
Why We Serve on Banana Leaf
Dining at Muthu's is not just about the food, it is about the ritual. The banana leaf is not a gimmick; it is a thousands-year-old tradition that elevates every bite.
01
Natural
Antiseptic
Banana leaves contain polyphenols that act as a natural purifier, making them a hygienic and clean vessel for hot food.
02
Enhances Flavour
When hot food is served on banana leaf, it absorbs a faint, pleasant aroma from the leaf, subtly enhancing the taste of every dish.
03
Cultural Ritual
In Indian tradition, the direction of the leaf tells a story, turned towards you during a meal, away during ceremonies. Every placement is intentional.
04
Eco-Friendly
Completely biodegradable and natural, banana leaves are an environmentally conscious choice that has stood the test of time.
